What Words Do To Us?

Our five physical senses, when activated individually or collectively, send the brain into first gear. We react automatically based on our accumulated experiences. The most basic response is survival when danger confronts us. Our mind/body connection spontaneously provides the needed energy and chemicals to react. Fear is the feeling we would be experiencing if we had time to think about it. Are words equally powerful? What do words mean to us?
Words have context, tone, and interpretation. We can experience words visually, verbally and through our writing. Language is one of our most powerful communication tools. It can lift us emotionally, educate and teach, generate anger, or bring on depression. We are aware that death and taxes seem to be universals, however language evolves, and integrates within our different cultures. Culture shapes language and words reflect culture. This is a complex relationship.
As of September 2020, 650 new words, senses and sub-entries were added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary added over 535 new words and meanings.
Rudyard Kipling said, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” President Barack Obama recalled a college experience where he felt that “the power of language can peel back truths and bring things to the surface.”
The Linguistic Society of America put forth the question “Is it true that the language I speak shapes my thoughts?” They proposed that “we are unable to think about things we don’t have words for, or we lack words for them because we don’t think about them?”
We listen to and read the English language as reflected in 2020’s unimaginable global virus impact, economic havoc on families and businesses, and psychological impact yet to be fully understood. Quarantine and social distancing offer an opportunity if we choose to learn from this unexpected reflective time we are experiencing. Alone, with a partner or home schooling may provide a bridge to an evolving “new normal” and personal growth. What words, new or old, might we explore that haven’t been in our day-to- day vocabulary or take on a new meaning, post virus? Keep your own word list, update it regularly, and enjoy exploring their derivation, meaning and connection to you personally. Science and mind/body connection bring balance out of chaos. With months of considering and culling my list here’s a sample of where I’m at a few days before the Nov. 3, 2020 election:

  • Energy
  • Quantum
  • Dimensions
  • Integration
  • Universes
  • Portals
  • Enlightened
  • Coherence
  • Transition
  • Healing
  • Yin/Yang
  • Infinity

Madonna sang, “Material Girl”, Sting wrote and sang “Spirits in the Material World.” We need to integrate the material world into our spiritual world.
