Innate

My partner and I can’t afford to be sick and shouldn’t have to depend on a medical system to recover. We are born with characteristics and qualities that exist naturally. These are inborn instincts, and not learned through external experience. We know this intellectually yet our culture programs us so differently.
This concept is observable in the animal kingdom of which we are an integral part. Spiders make webs and birds build nests. They are triggered naturally because these are life functions within all species. Honeybees “dance” on returning to their hive …this communicates where the food is to the other worker bees. Rigidly automatic, geared to survival and reproduction. What about us humans?
We question ourselves whether we have instincts like other species? It seems that our reflex actions are clearly innate. Babies grasp things without urging. This action happens because an object is placed within a baby’s hand. We easily speak, and animals do not. Walking is likely both instinctual and learned. We crawl on all fours until helped up to develop balance and leg muscles.
I have gone on for decades questioning, but not exploring, my innate behaviors. Instincts and intuition are worth considering if we humans desire to maximize the health strengths of our mind/body connection. As the current pandemic focuses attention on our immune system I want to learn more about keeping my body naturally strong as it is “innately” designed to do. I also am curious as to whether “emotions” are universally inborn as early 20th century psychologists proposed, or, as presented in more modern theory, acquired through our social experiences? The months of self-isolation and social distancing provide a stimulus and an opportunity to question old beliefs.
Innate immunity has been long studied yet our countries are woefully unprepared to deal with a modern-day pandemic.
I support my innate immunity with exercise, hydration, sleep, and reduce stress. Eating a balanced diet and minimizing my intake of sugar and salt has helped. We take responsibility for our health. What does the external world do for us?
It is not for a lack of resources that a country such as the USA had no contingency plan for a flu epidemic. When President Eisenhower, a General, warned about the growing influence of the military-industrial complex today’s government leaders have no excuse for the massive underinvestment in health, infrastructure, education, environment, housing, and workforce training. Trillions of dollars are under consideration to provide needed financial support for families and the unemployed.
When citizens are represented by government leaders that prioritize the needs of taxpayers, and tangibly respond, their actions will demonstrate a transition to a better world.
In the USA, which I am most familiar with, it is clear the government loves to spend all it receives and then wants more. Decades of putting band-aids on problems produce a cynical and frustrated citizenry.
I question why there are countless large planes parked in the desert when the American West is desperate for fire retardant aircraft to save lives, homes, and towns. Is California a sacrificial lamb politically? This year Colorado and Oregon also needed fire-fighting help. This is but one example of a recurring problem where the Federal Government could respond and make a real difference. What will it take to put aside party loyalty and represent all the people?
When elected leaders put institutions like prisons in private hands do they wash their hands of the problem? We know why there are more prisoners…an onerously harsh justice and sentencing system for minor offenses such as possession of marijuana. Getting to the heart of a problem through analysis and critical thinking is taught in America’s fine universities. Why has the electoral system become a path to a wealthy career? That was not the intention of the country’s founding fathers, quite the opposite. When a pipe leaks we get it replaced with better materials. Putting on duck tape is a short term fix…not a solution. Look how long it took for NASA to own up to the “O” Ring
failure that killed a space shuttle crew of dedicated and patriotic people.
The world doesn’t need so many US military bases around the globe. World War III is highly unlikely, yet the weapons industry creates more costly and advanced war machines eating-up valuable resources that could save lives.
Democracy promises people freedom. Yet our wealthiest countries have enslaved its people with limited free speech, invasion of privacy, and lifelong financial debt.
It is time to stop going one-step forward and two steps backward. A pandemic is a perfect storm to reflect on whom we choose to lead us and their qualities. Knowledge and experience are important. Compassion, understanding, and observing reality in its raw and clearest picture is even more critical.
