Strategy, Plan, Action

Old systems are being taken down. The virus has focused our attention on wanting to move beyond this time. There is a growing realization that outmoded institutions and thinking must be discarded. Identifying a problem requires more than short-term band-aids to resolve it. When decades pass and the same problems persist we should embrace fresh solutions. Health, wealth and happiness are possible when our dreams translate into action.
Technology and innovation have given us marvelous tools. Countries desalinate seawater, produce electric vehicles, reduce fossil fuel dependency, adopt the mantra of a sustainable environment and distribute food and objects to a global citizenry. There is progress and great opportunity. Yet that requires enlightened leaders and committed societies to see beyond stock markets and headlines and build with the tools and resources at hand. There are examples of countries turning visions into realities.
Check out Singapore, Japan, China, and South Korea on YouTube. All countries have similar infrastructure needs. If a “core” is weak, the tire will fail. A country such as the USA provides a window into how short-term thinking falls behind innovative opportunities.
I had, years ago; one of the first hybrid SUV’s available. Today much hyperbole touts electric trucks, cars and even farm equipment. Last week California experienced a huge “brown-out” in its electric system, ports are backlogged with shipping containers as both rail and truck distribution cannot handle the volume. Solar is expanding at warp speed in better made panels and lower costs to install and maintain. Without a new national grid system this energy cannot be efficiently distributed across long distances. Having more electric cars seeking to charge their batteries should send government leaders to unite and commit taxpayers hard earned dollars to acting on an obvious problem.
The military industrial complex that President Eisenhower cautioned against has successfully used strategy, plans and action to get what they want. We don’t need more weaponry for an imaginary third world war.
A vision without a problem.
High-speed rail replaces old bus systems, reduces car traffic, distributes food and goods faster and leads to modernized rail terminals. An effective national grid system transports energy produced through wind and solar across state lines. Do we need a bigger aircraft carrier, faster jet fighter plane or more overseas military bases? It is exciting to learn there is water on the moon or a specific mineral on Mars…but how does this get to the heart of a problem? It is taxpayers who pay for these actions.
A discerning and involved citizenry can reject the old systems and leaders. It is time to make it happen. Anything is possible. Only with strong beliefs is change going to occur.

Note: This commentary is written a day before the Nov. 3rd election 2020 in the USA. A tipping point in the history of a young nation.
