Tip Of The Iceberg

For two years, and far too many decades, we the people, have listened to our country´s leaders. We share universal beliefs around the world. Yet people we elect, and give power to, continue to disappoint us. We single out the “they” as responsible for massive economic inequality that permeates societies. As I reflect on my experiences in business, education and politics I  feel sad and angry. Why has it taken so long to recognize that it is me who could have done more.

We are taught that all politics is local. That statement acknowledges that the community we reside in reflects who we are. Many chose to stay and support their local shops, schools, and public parks, so important to our well being. All too many, however, subscribe to the mantra, work hard, and you can be successful and wealthy. If that were true, billions of people would at least enjoy a middle-class lifestyle.

Why does so much homelessness exist? Estimates approaching two hundred million people have been reported. The richest countries in the world, with the largest military expenditures, invest little of taxpayer´s money in basic necessities that people need. Most billionaires wealth comes from the public buying their products, services or essential utilities like water, electricity and fuels. How short-sighted to accumulate more than they could ever spend? Celebrities are famous from people buying their music, movies, books and sporting events. Rich people do donate to important programs. But tax system rules are crafted to benefit the very successful, as do off shore accounts and trusts.

When you don´t want to see homeless people, gated exclusive communities are developed. If city life is demanded, cut off essential services to a community, drive people away, and property values go down. Then high-rise apartments and penthouses become the new normal. Do you know cities that fit this picture?

Why is the most important word in our tool box. Apply this word as you read a headline, listen to an elected official´s opinions, await the next “breaking news”, and evaluate information from questionable sources.

Our challenge is to shake off the distractions of fear and confusion. Regain control of the ninety percent of our incredible mind occupied with worry. The answers are within us. We are in a transitional period. What do went want our community to be? Whom do we believe understands what serving the public interest means?

As children we ask why to the point of exhaustion
As adults we pray and meditate to wrap our brains and our heart around ❤️ around the word WE.
