A Perfect Storm

Now is the time…Poet, author and activist Maya Angelou said it so beautifully…”It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.”

When I first heard the expression global marketplace, it sounded so positive and unifying. I understood the economics of companies desiring to grow a business internationally. Yet I hoped it would also produce a greater cultural growth and understanding between countries. Why didn’t the worldwide exchange and production of material goods bring people closer together? I recognize that the primary goal of a company is to make a profit so it can sustain itself and grow. There are many forms of capitalism and this article is not about business except where it impacts equality and respect in societies.

I was a passionate lecturer of Anthropology. Sharing with students the creativity, spirituality, and individuality of different cultures usually evoked awe and appreciation in students. Each culture met its needs in unique ways. I learn that there is no single right answer to a problem. The best answer generally comes from sharing different perspectives so the idealist and common sense points of view are considered. Regardless of religious creation beliefs, humans marvel at the amazing diversity of plants, animals, and rocks. In our present virus lockdown many of us are viewing documentaries on the wonders of our planet…eye and mind opening visions of beauty, survival and evolution.

It is time we stood in awe of human diversity…we are long overdue to activate our moral compass.

My emotions these days are sometimes overwhelming. I feel a great loss.

Experiencing a web of grief, anger, fear, sadness, isolation, loneliness and frustration. The post September 11th attack in N.Y., introduced a higher level of racial, gender and religious profiling. It was already present in many countries. People became suspected terrorists on merely superficial visual appearance. The U.S. already had terrorists. Between 1983 and 2002 there were 36,110 bombings incidents and many tragic school shootings in the U.S. We were being programmed to accept a new norm. Is it incremental programming, drip by drip, as when we drip a faucet to prevent a pipe freezing or depend on intravenous feeding tubes. When change seems incremental, do we stop seeking other solutions and questioning what is going on? By deliberately or foolishly spreading pictures and news stories describing crimes and illegal activities committed only by people of color or ethnicity, we are perpetuating racism and bigotry in the name of safety and security. We need to shine a light on this issue…recognize the effect these messages have on us. Admitting we have “turned a blind eye” on racism is a step in the right direction. Reaction to the clear evidence of examples of police brutality in the U.S. that just occurred hit a nerve. It is not new. Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Black Americans, Jews, Muslims, are some of the targets of decades of hate crime. For me, the U.S. is a glaring example to highlight. Perhaps it is easier for other countries to point a finger, yet they too had underlying injustices to address. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks. Genocide, physical and mental, can occur in huge numbers or drip by drip. We are all one…we feel it when injustice occurs. We cannot continue to be the planet’s only species that kills within its own species…not for food and survival, but for power, control, and wealth. I am hopeful we can change channels. Switch off the mainstream news, political commentary, experts delivering confusion, and stories built on a foundation of fear.

A word on the current “lockdown” partially imposed around the world. It’s a terrible word. We’ve heard it in prison movies…like solitary confinement. Freedom stripped without our permission. When I looked at people currently criminally under “house arrest” I was shocked. They usually can temporarily leave their house for school, religion, essential shopping and more. No wonder we are beginning to feel less like victims and more like criminals.

The virus statistics defy understanding. Even taking into account different size populations, cultural differences and geographical factors,

the published numbers cannot be compared. There is no trusted clarity. I have to wonder why? When a “pandemic” is declared there better be sufficient justification. The consequences are enormous. Early news on investigations of the virus source are downplayed or lost in the pain and suffering of massive lockdowns, job loss and business shutdowns. If there is no serious “second wave” in most countries, and I pray there is not, we must question the actions taken by leaders. With “hindsight” much will be revealed. No prior flu, terrorist event or weather catastrophe shut down half the world population for months on end. But with each such event, the rules governing our freedom were altered in subtle but significant ways. Now, social distancing, masks, family separations, Internet censorship, disrupted education, increased dependence on government support, communities losing local businesses and services, and online transactions replacing physical currency enter our daily lives.

So much distraction and misdirection. It is not surprising that a lot of people are concerned about how the “new normal” rules will be imposed on the masses.

When I feel unable and frustrated trying to logically connect the dots and motivations of people controlling events I remind myself…WHAT CAN I DO?

I can treat everyone I meet or think about with love, kindness and equality. Check on a neighbor, offer some aid where need is obvious, smile and say hello, and stay personally positive, rested and strengthening my immune system through healthy eating, meditation and growing spiritually. The year 2020 was predicted by many astrologers to expose what has been hidden and ignored. Maybe we should thank out lucky stars that we can better now see what we don’t want.
