Lessons In Leadership
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall…and so do civilizations. When we don’t consider the past all we know is what we have personally experienced. History is recorded both in first-hand accounts and subsequently re-told by others with their different lenses and interpretations. Non-the-less, comparisons, and contrasts to our human ancestors provide a window through which we can observe our world today.
Leaders are evident in every significant event. A lack of leadership may lead to confusion, fear, chaos, and failure. Cynicism and disappointment seem to dominate recent cultural studies of how citizens feel about our most obvious institutions such as government, education, religion, and work. There are geographical exceptions of course, where strongly held belief systems or controlling forces appear to be working. I would think that the most advanced and wealthiest societies did the most for their people. Is it too much to expect that leaders understand, show empathy, and do their best to meet the needs of the people they serve? We only know what we know. My perception, therefore my reality, as a former business executive and educator is that an individual’s success, title, power, wealth, and status are not key indicators of great leaders. How such people use their achievements to relate to those around them or with whom they serve is where “the rubber meets the road.”

This article is being written two weeks before the 2020 Presidential election in the United States. If the leader of a country defines its culture a 250-year-old USA is at a tipping point. The current two-party system evidences major practical and philosophical differences in understanding the needs of the people whom they strive to govern. There is the paramount issue of a deadly virus, loss of millions of jobs, enormous economic inequality, systemic racism, and an outdated education model. The country presents itself as where dreams come true. Propelled by the spirit and hard work of immigrants, this diverse population, over decades, has grown increasingly cynical of their governing leaders to keep promises made while seeking voters’ support.
When elected leaders behave exclusively rather than inclusively, the ugly lack of empathy, compassion, and understanding shows a stark contrast between citizens’ expectations and the actions of those in power.
Human life is rarely a smooth and unblemished path. The bumps in our existence provide the tests and lessons to experience. When very privileged early in life, and personally shielded from the realities of loss, hunger, diversity, inequality, and the financial security it is not likely a person would automatically react with understanding to another person’s hardships.
As we observe the behavior and actions (or lack of) of our countries leaders the contrast between what we want to see and the hard facts in evidence should arouse strong feelings in us.
The entire planet is now experiencing the ravages of a deadly virus. Since culture, geography, and resources differ significantly around the globe we can’t expect a universal response by governments.
We should, however, observe and honor those leaders who address their citizenry with heartfelt words of empathy. Leaders who bring the best minds together to make educated decisions show courage and wisdom.
Our families, communities, and systems are challenged by the unknowing of what the “new normal” will consist of. Neighbors are helping neighbors now…supporting our local businesses is critical, but most of all, demonstrating kindness, compassion, and generosity is an individual responsibility.
We should not accept less from those we elect to positions of power.
I’m optimistic that the coming wave of new leaders will be the bridge to a more humanitarian and egalitarian socio-economic model. When leaders put the public interest first, it will signal that our species can become enlightened.
